Dedooser “Back-to-School” Refresher: Tips, Tricks, and Basics

Whether you are brand new to Dedoose, or haven’t used our app for a semester or two, this blog summarizes FAQs ranging from basic to intermediate.

The Fall Semester is upon us, Dedoosers!

.

That means this is the perfect time to review best practices, tips, and tricks.  We’ll use this blog to help get you started in our app for the first time, or keep you going if you’re already familiar with the basics.

Don’t forget to access the short videos embedded within the blog for step-by-step guidance on how to complete each of the functions reviewed below. We’re working on growing our video library and learning resources, but in the meantime, you can always reference our RESOURCES page for the most recent additions to our digital library.

Keep in mind that you can access more Dedoose skills from our User Guide (ideal for students on a budget!) or tap into theoretical underpinnings of research and how these can be leveraged via the official textbook (perfect for teaching methods classes, or for grad students).

“How do I Add and Remove Users in Dedoose?”

.

Since the beginning, account security and data privacy have been guiding lights of Dedoose. As such, you are always in control as an administrator of adding or removing project members. The only caveat to this pertains to existing users who may be joining your project.

.

To add a user, first login and then navigate to the account workspace to start the process. From here you can control which users remain a part of your group. You’ll see options for removing, selecting, and adding users once in this portion of Dedoose. Click “Create New Account” and simply provide the information once prompted.

.

To remove a user, simply select the desired user and click the Remove User button in the same workspace area. If you are instead trying to add a user who has a pre-existing Dedoose account to your project, you will want to email [email protected] and provide them with the Dedooser’s email address and name. This way, they can help to connect the user with your project without them being double charged for having two accounts.

.

An added benefit of the Dedoose account workspace is that you can always be sure of a given user’s access level and privileges. Each user will have a co-display of their level of authority on the project, such as “View Only”.

  • Provide the name and email address of the project member to add

*Note: This prevents an existing user from incurring double-billing from linking them as a new user to your project.

“How Do I Make a Payment in Dedoose?”

.

One of the features that helps Dedoose to stand apart from our competitors is the fact that we only charge you for months you are active. By active, we mean logging into your account and accessing your data.

.

Remember: the day you sign up for Dedoose, or the day that your project admin signed up for the project account, is the anniversary date of your monthly activity (I.e. Day one of your billing cycle).

.

You will encounter reminders to make payments in order to log in if you do not have a credit card on file (we’ll get to that in a minute!). In the event you run into one of these messages, simply follow the payment procedure listed below.

.

First, navigate to the account workspace in Dedoose using the account to be billed. Scroll over to the Billing Tab, where you’ll see our Make Payment button. From here, you can enter the needed billing information, and save credit card information on file for future use if needed.

.

You can also check options for default payments in this area, which can be specified in six or 12 month intervals. If you want to enter a specific billing threshold for automatic payments, you can also perform that process here.

“How Do I Code Blind (i.e., Hide Other People’s Coding) in Dedoose?”

.

Instant collaboration with your project teammates is one feature of Dedoose that users seem to love the most! That’s why we’ve built in multiple tools to help groups work more efficiently. Among these is the Code Blind filter option, which allows you to “hide” the previous code application of other users so you can start fresh.

.

This is particularly useful in preventing bias, or for checking the code application accuracy of other team members. To access this feature, simply open a media file (video, audio, text, PDF, etc.). If other people have already applied coding to the document, you should see the codes appear automatically in different colors.

.

To clear and refresh this code application view while saving other people’s work, go to the Dataset tab. Here, you can remove other users’ excerpts by checking “Deactivate All”, then re-selecting only your own user name.

.

Once completed, you will see the current media dataset update automatically. When you return to the same media file to be coded, you will see all other users’ data cleared from the document.

  • Login
  • Open a media file
  • View other users’ code applications as needed
  • Go to “Dataset” Tab
  • Remove all other users by clicking “Deactivate All”
  • Select/Add your username to see only your applications

“How Do I Navigate the Admin Account Workspace in my Project?”

.

Another facet of collaborative team research is the need for a designated administrative user for projects. If this is a role you find yourself in, this means you can control which other users will become and remain a part of your project’s account.

.

If you navigate to the Projects Tab, you will see a list of all projects that are accessible to users in your account. You should note, however, that this does not automatically give every listed user access to every listed project. You still need to grant a user access to a particular project individually, first.

.

While viewing the Security Tab, you can enforce policies, define criteria, and control the idle timer. In addition, you can grant or revoke access as needed when it comes to the administrative rights of other users on the project in this area.

.
